Arithmetic Density
The number of people divided by square miles.
Physiological Density
The number of people per unit of arable land.

Dependency Ratio
The number of dependents divided by the non-dependent working age group (ages 15-64).
Population Pyramid Stage 2 Shape
Triangular or Christmas tree shape indicating high child dependency ratio with high birth rates.
Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
The average number of children a woman will have during her lifetime; a TFR of 2.1 indicates normal or no growth.
Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
The total number of live births per 1,000 people in a year.
Crude Death Rate (CDR)
The total number of deaths per 1,000 people in a given year.
Net Migration Rate (NIR)
The difference between the crude birth rate and the crude death rate, indicating a country's population growth.
Malthusian Theory
A theory stating that population grows exponentially while food production grows arithmetically; predicts overpopulation when resources are inadequate.
Neo-Malthusian
A modern counterpart to Malthusian theory, focusing on sustainable resource use and the limits of Earth's carrying capacity.
Pronatalist Policy
Policies that encourage higher birth rates.
Anti-Natalist Policy
Policies that discourage birth or promote lower birth rates, such as China's one-child policy.
Ravenstein's Laws of Migration
A set of laws describing the tendencies and patterns of migration.
Intervening Opportunity
