What is Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)?
is a type of periodic motion — that means it repeats itself in equal intervals of time.
Hooke’s law ?
F = −kx
What is the equilibrium position?
The point where the spring is neither stretched nor compressed (x = 0).
What does the negative sign in F=−kx mean?
shows the force always acts to restore the object to its equilibrium position.
What is amplitude (A)?
The maximum displacement from the equilibrium position.
Define one cycle in SHM.
One complete to-and-fro motion of the object.
Define period (T) and frequency (f).
T = time for one complete cycle
f = number of cycles per second (f = 1/T)
What is the condition for SHM?
The restoring force (or acceleration) is proportional and opposite to displacement.
a=−ω2x
What happens if the spring is vertical?
Gravity shifts the equilibrium position to where kx0=mg, but the motion is still SHM.
