Counter-globalization movements
Movements that resist and challenge the effects of globalization, particularly those originating from the Global South.
MOSOP
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, formed in the 1990s to protest against Shell's exploitation and pollution in Nigeria.
Environmental justice
The fair treatment and involvement of all people in environmental laws, regulations, and policies, particularly in relation to marginalized communities.
Zapatistas
Members of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Mexico, who resist oppression and seek justice and dignity for Indigenous communities.
Chipko Movement
An Indian non-violent movement focused on environmental conservation, particularly protecting forests from deforestation.
Green Belt Movement
An environmental organization founded in Kenya by Wangari Maathai, promoting tree planting, soil conservation, and women's rights.
Neoliberal globalization
An economic framework that promotes free markets, privatization, and the reduction of government intervention, often harming local communities.
Ecological war
The destructive impact of large corporations' operations on local environments and communities, exemplified by the actions of Shell in Ogoniland.
World Social Forum (WSF)
A global platform for civil society to discuss and promote alternatives to neoliberal globalization, initiated as a response to the World Economic Forum.
Transnational social movements
Movements that transcend national boundaries to advocate for social change, often linking local struggles to global contexts.
