Five Pillars of Islam
The foundational acts of worship and practice in Islam that every Muslim is expected to follow.
Mecca
The most holy city in Islam, where the Ka'ba is located.
Ka'ba
A sacred shrine in Mecca that houses the black stone and is the focal point of Islamic worship.
Monotheism
The belief in a single God, which is a central tenet of Islam.
Polytheism
The belief in multiple gods, which was prevalent before the rise of Islam.
Pilgrimage
A religious journey to a sacred place, specifically to Mecca in the context of Islam.
Muhammad
The founder of Islam, who lived from approximately 570 to 632 CE and received revelations from God.
Khadijah
Muhammad's wealthy widow who provided him with support and time for contemplation.
Angel Gabriel
The angel who visited Muhammad in 610 CE and commanded him to recite the words of God.
Qur'an
The holy book of Islam, compiled from the revelations received by Muhammad.
Hijra
The migration of Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, marking the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
Islamic Calendar
A lunar calendar consisting of 12 months, totaling 354 days in a year.
Triumph
Muhammad's successful return to Mecca in 630 CE, where he destroyed idols and rededicated the Ka'ba to Allah.
Shahada
The first pillar of Islam, the declaration of faith stating, "There is no God but God, and Muhammad is his prophet."
Salat
The second pillar of Islam, which involves performing individual prayers five times a day facing Mecca.
Sawm
The third pillar of Islam, which refers to fasting from dawn to dusk during the month of Ramadan.
Zakat
The fourth pillar of Islam, which is the obligatory alms-giving to the needy, typically 2.5% of savings.
Hajj
The fifth pillar of Islam, the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime if financially able.
