Strict Aerobe
An organism that needs O2 for cellular respiration and will die without it.
Facultative Anaerobe
An organism that can use O2 for cellular respiration but can also utilize alternate electron acceptors when O2 is not present.
Aerotolerant Anaerobe
An organism that does not use O2 for cellular respiration but is not harmed by its presence.
Strict Anaerobe
An organism that cannot use O2 for cellular respiration and finds O2 toxic.
Fluid Thioglycollate (FTG)
A medium used to test for oxygen requirements, containing a reducing agent to keep it anaerobic.
Resazurin
An oxygen indicator that turns red when oxygen is present.
Brewer Agar Plates
A culture medium used to compare aerobic and anaerobic growth; it contains oxygen indicators.
Palladium Catalyst
Used to facilitate the removal of oxygen in anaerobic jars by releasing hydrogen.
Enterotube
A multitest system used for the identification of enteric bacteria through various biochemical tests.
Voges Proskauer Test
A confirmatory test used to determine the presence of acetoin in the fermentation process.
