The cognitive and emotional components of arousal, reflecting personal awareness and perception of sexual excitement.
Concordance
The degree to which physiological arousal aligns with subjective sexual arousal.
Parasympathetic Nervous System

Vasocongestion
The swelling of erectile tissues in the genitals due to increased blood flow, often occurring during sexual arousal.
Cowper's Gland
Glands that produce a pre-ejaculatory fluid which aids in lubrication during sexual arousal.
Penile Pathysmograph
A device that measures physiological arousal in men by detecting changes in the girth of the penis.
Vaginal Plethysmograph
A device used to measure physiological arousal in individuals with vulvas by detecting changes in blood flow to the vaginal wall.
Blue Balls
A condition described as discomfort in the testicles due to prolonged arousal without release or orgasm.
Nitric Oxide
A molecule that helps mediate relaxation of blood vessels and plays a role in erections.
Ejaculation
The release of semen from the male reproductive system during orgasm.
Kegel Exercises
Exercises that strengthen pelvic floor muscles, which can enhance sexual experience and increase the likelihood of orgasm.
Orgasm Gap
The disparity in frequency of orgasms experienced by self-identified men compared to self-identified women.
Cultural Scripts
Implicit societal norms and behaviors that guide expectations in sexual interactions.
Oxytocin
A hormone released during orgasm that is associated with bonding and emotional connection.
Perception of Sexual Arousal
How individuals mentally interpret and evaluate their sexual arousal in relation to their physiological responses.
