Feudalism
A medieval system where the king grants land to nobles in exchange for loyalty and military service; nobles grant protection and land to knights, while peasants work the land and pay rent in goods or labor.
Nobles
Landholders who swear loyalty to the king and provide military service in exchange for land.
Knights
Mounted warriors who fought for nobles and protected the land.
Peasants
The laboring class who work the land and pay rent or taxes in food or services.
Primary sources
Original records or objects from the time studied; provide direct evidence of the past (e.g., artifacts and documents).
Secondary sources
Works that interpret or analyze primary sources to provide information about past events.
Artifact
An object made or modified by humans in the past; a type of primary source.
Document
A written record from the past; a primary source.
Evidence
Information used to support claims about history, including primary and secondary sources.
Contestability
The idea that historical interpretations can be debated and revised with new evidence.
Empathy
The ability to understand and share the feelings of people in history.
Community and change
The concept that history involves communities and the changes they undergo over time.
Significance
The importance of a historical event, judged by its impact and lasting effects.
Effect and cause
The relationship where causes produce effects and lead to changes in society.
Black Death
The medieval plague that caused widespread social and economic upheaval and reshaped societies.
COVID-19 pandemic
A modern global event illustrating how widespread events can transform societies and be connected to today.
