Organic Chemistry
The study of compounds containing carbon.
Urea
The first manmade organic compound demonstrated by Friedrich Wöhler, with the chemical formula NH2CONH2.
Biochemicals
Types of organic compounds that include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, hormones, vitamins, and more.
Covalent Bonding
The type of bonding that is almost entirely present in organic compounds.
Functional Group
A site of chemical reactivity that determines the physical properties of a compound and classifies organic compounds into families.
Alcohol Functional Group
An -OH (hydroxyl) group bonded to a tetrahedral carbon atom.
Aldehyde Functional Group
A carbonyl group (-C=O) bonded to a hydrogen atom.
Ketone Functional Group
A carbonyl group bonded to two carbon atoms.
Carboxylic Acid
A functional group represented as -COOH, which is a combination of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups.
Cyclic Compounds
Organic compounds where carbon atoms form a ring structure.
