Practical Assessment
An opportunity for learners to demonstrate their scientific skills, including experimental techniques, analysis, and evaluation.
Section A
Involves obtaining results in the practical assessment, allowing learners to work in groups to conduct experiments and answer related questions.
Section B
Focuses on analyzing and evaluating the data obtained in Section A individually, under formal supervision and without teacher assistance.
WJEC
The external body responsible for marking the practical assessment tasks, providing three tasks annually based on GCSE Applied Science content.
Limited Level of Control
Learners can collaborate to obtain results in Section A but must respond to questions independently.
High Level of Control
In Section B, learners must work individually without teacher feedback, analyzing and evaluating data from Section A.
Spring Term
The period between January and February when the practical assessment takes place, recommended for the final year of study.
Task Selection
Centers can choose two out of the three tasks provided by WJEC for learners to complete in the practical assessment.
Equipment Failure
Teacher assistance may be given in case of equipment failure during the practical assessment.
Annual Basis
The practical assessment tasks provided by WJEC change yearly, with details for planning and administration shared with centers before the assessment.
