What is depression?
Depression is a mood disorder characterised by persistent low mood, reduced motivation, and a range of behavioural, emotional, and cognitive symptoms.
What are the two types of depression?
Unipolar (major) depression
Bipolar disorder (manic depression)
What are the four behavioural characteristics of depression?
Weight loss or gain
Low energy
Self-harm
Poor personal hygiene
What are the two emotional characteristics of depression?
Sadness- constant low mood
Reduced self-worth- feelings of guilt
What are the two cognitive characteristics of depression?
Poor concentration
Persistent negative thinking- negative view of things
What is unipolar (major) depression?
A form of depression involving only depressive episodes, without manic phases.
Affects approximately 25% of women and 12% of men over their lifetime.
What is bipolar (manic) depression?
A disorder characterised by alternating depressive and manic episodes.
Affects around 2% of the population
What are manic episodes in bipolar disorder?
Manic episodes involve:
Elevated mood and high energy
Risk-taking behaviour
Possible delusions
