Anatomical Position
Standardized reference position of the human body where palms face anteriorly (forward), feet are parallel, arms are at sides, and eyes are open.
Acromial
Regional term referring to the point of the shoulder.
Hallux
Regional term referring to the big toe, or great toe.
Mental
Regional term referring to the region of the chin.
Olecranal
Regional term referring to the posterior aspect of the elbow.
Otic
Regional term referring to the region of the ear.
Palmar
Regional term referring to the palm of the hand.
Pedal
Regional term referring to the foot.
Plantar
Regional term referring to the sole of the foot.
Pollex
Regional term referring to the thumb.
Superior vs Inferior
Directional terms applied exclusively to the head and trunk.
Proximal vs Distal
Directional terms applied exclusively to the limbs.
Midsagittal Plane
Anatomical plane located directly in the middle of the body, dividing it into equal left and right halves.
Parasagittal Plane
Anatomical plane located off-center, dividing the body into unequal left and right portions.
Cutaneous Membranes
Tissue membrane represented by the skin; the only external and dehydrated (dry) membrane.
Serous Membranes
Double-layered tissue membranes consisting of a visceral layer and a parietal layer, including the pericardium, pleural, and peritoneal membranes.
Mucous Membranes
Tissue membranes that line all bodily openings, including the GI, respiratory, and urinary tracts.
Synovial Membranes
Tissue membranes composed of connective tissue only that produce synovial fluid.
Epithelial Tissue
Tissue type that lines or covers internal or external spaces; characterized as avascular, highly cellular, and low acellular.
Connective Tissue
Tissue type characterized by low cell density (low cellular) and high extracellular matrix/fiber content (highly acellular).
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Type of epithelium that functions to provide abrasion resistance and waterproofing.
Loose Areolar Connective Tissue
Fibrous loose connective tissue located in muscle fascia and surrounding epithelial tissue.
Cartilage
Connective tissue type distinguished by a clear ground substance and chondrocytes located inside lacunae.
Dorsal Body Cavity
Body cavity containing the cranial cavity (housing the brain) and the vertebral cavity (housing the spinal cord).
Ventral Body Cavity
Body cavity containing the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity.
