Anthropometry
The science that deals with the measurement of size, proportions and composition of the human body.
Kinanthropometry
Anthropometry directed specifically to kinesiology.
Body Composition
The proportion of fat and fat-free mass in the human body.
Subcutaneous Fat
Fat stored in the layer just beneath the skin.
Visceral Fat
Fat located around internal organs, which poses greater health risks.
Density (in context of body composition)
Mass divided by volume; used to assess body fat percentage.
Hydrostatic Weighing
A method of determining body density and fat proportion using water displacement.
Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA)
A medical imaging technique used to measure fat mass, fat-free mass, and bone mineral.
Skinfold Measurements
A method that assesses subcutaneous fat to estimate whole body fat content.
Bioelectrical Impedance
A technique that measures the resistance of body tissues to electrical flow to estimate body composition.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
A calculation that uses height and weight to estimate body fat.
Waist-to-Hip Ratio
A measurement comparing the waist circumference to the hip circumference to assess fat distribution.
Somatotyping
A system for classifying human physique into three body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph.
