New England Colonies

New England Colonies

A subset of the thirteen colonies, it included the Province of Massachesuetts Bay Colony, Connecticut Colony, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and Province of New Hampshire, and other smaller and short-lived colonies. It is a largely puritan region.

Popham Colony

A colony established by Plymouth Company in 1607 and backed financially by John Popham, a couple months after Jamestown. It was abandoned 14 months later in 1608 because of a lack of leadership, John Pophams dying, and there storehouse burning down. The first ship built in America was built here.

Plymouth Colony

A colony established by the English Pilgrims, or seperatists, 1620. It was the second permanent English colony in America, after the Jamestown Colony. It merged with the Massauchetts Bay Colony and other territories in 1691 to form the Province of Massauchetts Bay.

Massachusetts Bay Colony

A colony established by the puritans in 1630, it became a major Puritan colony. It was a major trading center, and was home to Boston. It merged with the Plymouth community and other territories to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

Province of New Hampshire

A colony established by John Mason in 1629, it merged with the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1641,and then it became a royal colony in 1679. New Hampshire was the first colony to later break away from British rule and declare themselves independent in the American Revolution. It became one of the originial thirteen U.S states as New Hampshire.

Saybrook Colony

A colony established by John Winthrop in 1635, It merged with the Connecticut Colony in 1644.

Connecticut Colony

A colony established by Thomas Hooker in 1636, it was chartered as a royal colony in 1662. It is self-governing and is the origin of Fundamental Orders. It participated in the American Revolution and became one of the originial thirteen U.S states as Connecticut.

Providence Plantations

A colony established in 1636, it merged with three other colonies in 1663 to make the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence.

New Haven Colony

Puritans John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton (governor) settled in Quinnipac (New Haven) in 1638, but it became weak and was absorbed into Connecticut in 1665.

Newports Colony

A colony established in 1639, Newport grew to be the largest of the three colonies which would come to be the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence. merged with three other colonies in 1663 to make the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Portsmouth Colony

A settlement near Narragansett Bay founded by the dissident Anne Hutchinson in 1638. Merged with three other colonies in 1663 to make the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Warwick Colony

A colony established in 1642, it merged with three other colonies in 1663 to make the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

A colony established in 1663 by religious groups on land bought and gifted by the local Native Americans, it is a merge of 4 smaller colonies, Portsmouth, Newport, Warwick, and Providence Plantations. Rhode Island became a colony known for religious freedoms and the early abolition of slavery. It participated in the American Revolution and became one of the original thirteen U.S states as Rhode Island.

Province of Massachusetts Bay

A colony established in 1691 when Massachusetts Bay colony and Plymouth colony, along with other territories, combined. As with the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it was a major trading center and was home to Boston, it was a major Puritan colony like Massachusetts Bay Colony was. It participated in the American Revolution and became one of the original thirteen U.S states as Massachusetts.

New England Confederation

Formed in 1643 to provide for the defense of the four New England colonies, and also acted as a court in disputes between colonies.

Dominion of New England

An administrative union of English colonies in the New England region and part of mid-atlantic that was created in 1686 and lasted to 1689 when the colonists overthrew its government.
