Cold War
A period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union and the United States after World War II.
Yalta Conference
A meeting of Allied leaders in 1945 to discuss post-war reorganization.
Demilitarization
The reduction or elimination of military forces in a country, often after a conflict.
Zaibatsu
Japanese term for large family-controlled vertical monopolies that dominated the economy.
People's Liberation Army
The combined military forces of the People's Republic of China, which played a key role in establishing Communist control.
Domino Theory
The belief that the spread of communism in one country could lead to its spread in neighboring countries.
Sino-Soviet Alliance
The political and military alliance formed between China and the Soviet Union in the 1950s.
National Liberation Movement
A movement aimed at achieving independence for nations or regions under colonial rule.
Guomindang (GMD)
The Nationalist Party of China that opposed the Chinese Communist Party.
Communist Party of China (CCP)
The ruling political party of China, founded in 1921, which led the country post-1949.
Civil War
A war between groups within the same country or state.
Korean War
A conflict from 1950 to 1953 between North Korea (with support from China and the USSR) and South Korea (supported by the US and other UN nations).
Armistice
An agreement to stop fighting and negotiate a peace settlement.
Indian Independence Act
A 1947 Act of the British Parliament that granted independence to India and Pakistan.
Partition of India
The division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan in 1947.
Neo-colonialism
A form of indirect control where a country maintains influence over another country through economic or political pressures.
