Pectoral Girdle

• Made up of the clavicle and the scapula

• Articulates with the trunk and supports the upper limbs

Clavicle

• An S-shaped bone that extends between the sternum (manubrium) and the scapula

Sternal End of the Clavicle

• Medial, articulates with the sternum (manubrium)

• Forms the sternoclavicular joint

Acromial End of the Clavicle

• Lateral

• Broad & Flat

  • Articulates with the acromion of the scapula

Scapula

• Broad, flat, triangular bone that forms the “shoulder blades”

• One on the right side of the body and one on the left

Spine of the Scapula

• Posterior Ridge

Coracoid Process

• Smaller, more anterior projection of the scapula

Acromion Process

• Posterior process that is continuous with the spine of the clavicle

  • Articulates with the acromial end of the clavicle to form the acromioclavicular joint

Glenoid Cavity

• Lateral, cup-shaped, shallow depression that articulates with the head of the humerus

• Creates the glenohumeral joint

• “Socket” of the ball & socket joint that makes up the shoulder
