What major differences are there between the red figure side and the black figure?

  • The Red figure side has no depiction of Hermes or the slave

  • Herakles takes up a larger amount of the frieze in the RF side

  • Herakles had no weapons on the RF side → He is not as characterised

  • Athene is wearing a different outfit on each side

How is detail created in the figure of Herakles? How does he compare to the BF side

  • His drapery is see-through making it possible to see his calve and thigh beneath it

  • He holds a black kantharos against a red background → the contrast is aesthetically pleasing and stands out

  • His anatomy is poorly depicted however in comparison to the BF side → none of his musculature is defined e.g. pectorals, biceps → makes it difficult to characterise him

How is detail created in the figure of Athene?

  • She is static and does not convey much movement or anatomy beneath her rigid dress

  • Her dress is intricately patterned using paint with a variety of patterns on it e.g. squares and scale like patterns

  • She holds out a lotus flower to Herakles conveying movement, her digits are long and finely detailed

What does Robin Osbourne say about this pot?

‘What this pot doesn’t however do much with is the possibility in red figure of making the figures seem three dimensional’
