Oral Tablet/Capsule

Step 1

Read and interpret the veterinarian order

Step 2

Read the medication bottle to confirm the proper dose

Step 3

Transfer the appropriate number of tablets/capsules to a medication cup

Step 4

Put on gloves to avoid contact with the tablet/capsule

Step 5

Wrap one arm behind the patient and hold the upper jaw with the non-dominant hand

Step 6

Grab the capsule holder tool with medication

Step 7

Safely grip the upper jaw/muzzle with one hand avoiding placing their hand where the patient could easily bite down.

Step 8

Open the lower jaw by applying a small amount of pressure at the tip of the lower jaw

Step 9

Put the capsule tool as far into the mouth in order to dispense medication on top of the patient's tongue

Step 10

Use the capsule holder to quickly administer medication

Step 11

Use hand to gently close the patient's lower jaw and tilt the head up

Step 12

Rub the patient's throat applying light pressure to ensure that the patient swallows the capsule

Step 13

Observe the patient for a short time to make sure the medication was swallowed
