Flashcards for P15.1 AQA GCSE
Magnetic Compass
A device with a tiny magnetic needle that pivots at its center, indicating direction based on the Earth's magnetic field.
North Pole (N-pole)
The end of a compass or bar magnet that points north, also known as the north-seeking pole.
South Pole (S-pole)
The end of a compass or bar magnet that points south, also known as the south-seeking pole.
Attraction
The force that pulls together unlike poles of magnets (N-pole attracts S-pole).
Repulsion
The force that pushes apart like poles of magnets (N-pole repels N-pole).
Magnetic Materials
Objects made of iron, steel, cobalt, or nickel that can be magnetized or demagnetized.
Permanent Magnets
Magnets made of steel that retain their magnetism over time.
Magnetic Field
The region around a magnet where magnetic forces can be detected, often visualized with iron filings.
Magnetic Field Lines
Lines that represent the strength and direction of a magnetic field, more concentrated at the poles.
Plotting Compass
A tool that aligns itself along magnetic field lines, indicating the direction of the magnetic field from N-pole to S-pole.
