Confederate States of America
The South’s break away from the rest of the states. Stood for the idea of slavery.
Strength of the North
Larger population. Technologically advanced. It had more farms and it’s land contained more resources. Controlled most seas and railroads.
Weakness of the North
Little military leadership and overall weak army.
Strength of the South
Great strengths of Military. Larger geographical size.
Weakness of the South
Weak economy and little transportation systems. Few factories for supply.
Union’s war strategy part one
Surround the South and cut off trade.
Union’s war strategy part two
Divide Confederacy into sections to prevent regions from helping each other.
Union’s war strategy part three
Capture the capital of the confederacy, Richmond, Virginia.
Rose O’ Neal Greenhow
A spy for the South who used her friendship in the government to learn how Richmond would be attacked. She tried to use this information to counter this from happening with the South.
Battle of Bull Run
Large victory for the South. Southern troops had found out of the North’s plan.
Women During the War
Took place at Home front. Supported families, farms, and business while husbands were away. Messengers, guides, scouts,smugglers and spies for the war.
“Dragon Dix” Dorothea Dix
Tended the sick army. Director of the armies nursing service.
Anaconda Plan Step One Result
Success. Cut off most of the trade of south. South unable to export cotton to Europe.
Anaconda Plan Step Two Result
Confederate army prevented the capture of Richmond despite being out numbered.
Battle of Antietam
Confederate and Union army fought over Maryland. Lee retreated. Seen as Union victory but was a defeat for both armies. Many died. Bloodiest day of the War.
Emancipation Proclamation
Set all Confederate slaves to be free. Not many immediate effects but brought the idea of fighting for America’s cause to the minds of the Union
Battle of Gettysburg
Lee wanted to risk invading another Northern territory. Troops met at Pennsylvania. Victory for the Union. Strong losses on both sides of the war. Many killed or wounded.
Merrimac and the Monitor
Fight between the Union and Confederate ships. Neither claimed victory. Showed the power of ironclad ships.
Vicksburg
Grant battled for power over Vicksburg. The Union took Vicksburg but had trouble surviving with little food or material. Vicksburg surrendered.
Massachusetts 54th
Black Soldiers. After protests they were allowed equal play as the other soldiers.
General Grant
Fought for the Union. Mapped out strategy for ending the war.
Total War
War on enemy’s will to fight and ability to support and army.
War End
The war ended as Lee’s army at Petersburg was broken through by Grant and his army. Union troops marched into Richmond.
Appomattox Court House
Lee surrendered the war here. Soldiers were allowed to return in peace.
