Twenty seventh amendment (1992)
Delays congressional pay raises until after the next election.
First Amendment
Protects freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
Second Amendment
Right to keep and bear arms.
Third Amendment
Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes during peacetime.
Fourth Amendment
Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.
Fifth Amendment
Guarantees due process, protection against self-incrimination and double jeopardy; and sets eminent domain rules.
Sixth Amendment
Right to a speedy and public trial, an impartial jury, and legal counsel.
Seventh Amendment
Right to a jury trial in civil cases.
Eighth Amendment
Prohibits excessive bail, fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.
Ninth Amendment
States that rights not listed in the Constitution are still retained by the people.
Tenth Amendment
Powers not given to the federal government are reserved to the states or the people.

Limits lawsuits against states in federal courts (ratified 1795).
Twelfth Amendment 1804
Revises the procedure for electing the President and Vice President with separate ballots (ratified 1804).
Thirteenth Amendment 1865
Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime (ratified 1865).
Fourteenth Amendment 1868
Grants citizenship to all born or naturalized in the U.S., guarantees equal protection and due process (ratified 1868).
Fifteenth Amendment 1870
Prohibits voting restrictions based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude (ratified 1870).
Sixteenth Amendment 1913
Allows the federal government to collect income tax (ratified 1913).
Seventeenth Amendment 1913
Establishes direct election of U.S. Senators by the people (ratified 1913).
Eighteenth Amendment 1913
Prohibits the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol (Prohibition) (ratified 1919).
Nineteenth Amendment 1920
Grants women the right to vote (ratified 1920).
Twentieth Amendment 1933
Changes the start dates of presidential and congressional terms ('Lame Duck Amendment') (ratified 1933).
Twenty-First Amendment 1933
Repeals the Eighteenth Amendment (ends Prohibition) (ratified 1933).
Twenty-Second Amendment 1951
Limits the President to two terms in office (ratified 1951).
