Globalization

the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.

World Trade Organization (WTO)

a permanent global institution to promote international trade and to settle international trade disputes

Group of Eight (G8)

An international organization of the leading capitalist industrial nations: the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Russia.

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)

Agreement that created a free-trade area among the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Multinational corporations (MNC)

companies that operate production or service facilities outside their home country

Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

A decentralized computer network developed in the late 1960s by the US Department of Defense in conjunction with MIT.

Culture war

A term describing the political struggle, between religious traditionalists and secular liberals

Immigration and Nationality Act

Act passed in 1965 that abolished national origin quotas and established overall hemisphere quotas

A proposition approved by California voters in 1996 that outlawed affirmative action in state employment and public education.

Defense of Marriage ACT (DOMA)

1996, Declares that states are not obligated to recognize any same sex marriages that might not be legally sanctioned in other states, defined marriage and spouse in heterosexual terms for federal law

Webster v. Reproductive Health Services

allowed states to ban abortions from public hospitals and permitted doctors to test to see if fetuses were viable
