Emerges through the struggle for power between the protagonist and the antagonist
Adversaries should be equally matched
Strengths don't need to be exactly the same, one rival should have compensating strengths to match the other
Beginning the story
Start at the point of initial conflict, briefly demonstrating the status quo before the conflict begins
Struggle
between the characters' power curves, when the antagonist rises with power, the protagonist falls
1st dramatic phase
Antagonist gains superiority over the protagonist. The protagonist is usually at a disadvantage
2nd dramatic phase
Reverses the protagonists descent through a reversal of fortune. The antagonist is aware of the rise. They reach the same level of power
3rd dramatic phase
deals with the final confrontation between rivals. After the resolution, the protagonist restores order
