Metabolism
All of the chemical reactions within each cell of an organism.
Catabolic reactions
Break down larger molecules into simpler compounds, releasing energy (exergonic).
Anabolic reactions
Build larger molecules from smaller ones, requiring the consumption of energy (endergonic).
Reactants
Substances that are changed during a chemical reaction.
Products
Substances that are made by a chemical reaction.
Endothermic reaction
Absorbs energy, such as photosynthesis.
Exothermic reaction
Releases energy, such as cellular respiration.
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2, where light energy is stored as chemical energy in sugar.
Cellular respiration equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O, where chemical energy in sugar is converted to ATP.
Enzymes
Mostly proteins that speed up biochemical reactions by lowering activation energy.
Catalyst
Substances that speed up reactions without being permanently altered.
Specificity of enzymes
Enzymes are very specialized and bind to specific reactants to catalyze reactions.
