New Deal

A program that had two phases which aimed to relieve the economic and social damages caused by the Great Depression

Hundred Days

A critical time in which 15 major pieces of the New Deal legislation were passed.

TVA

Built and maintained dams in the Tennessee River Valley. Provided jobs, flood control and cheap hydro-electricity.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

A government institution that observed and regulated the stock market.

Federal Securities Act

A 1933 law that required corporations to provide complete, accurate information on all stock offerings

Franklin Delanor Roosevelt (FDR)

32th President during the Great Depression. Proposed the New Deal.

Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act (SCDAA)

Paid farmers to stop producing crops that damaged soil, like wheat.

Resettlement Administration

Provided loans to small farmers to buy land.

Farm Security Administration

Helped farmers become landowners and helped set up camps for migrant workers.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)

Provided protection to peoples savings in banks in case they fail.

Wagner Act/National Labor Relations Act

Guarantees workers the right to establish a trade union.

Memorial Day Massacre (1937)

Sit down strike on Memorial Day, police attack and kill striking steelworkers outside the plant.

Fair Labor Act

Establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Wife of FDR, social reformer, supported equal rights for women and AAs

Social Security Act

Provides aid to retirees, unemployed, people with disabilities, and families with dependent children

Mary McLeod Bethune

AA leader, Director of Negro Affairs in the NYA; led Black Cabinet of unofficial AA advisers to FDR

New Deal Coalition

Alliance of diverse groups (southern whites/AA's/unionized workers) who supported the policies of the Democratic Party in 1930's and 1940's

Workers Progress Administration (WPA)

Agency (established as part of New Deal), provided unemployed with jobs (construction/garment making/teaching/the arts/etc.)
