Subnational units
A type of regional legislature under the national level; for example, the USA has 60 and China has 23.
Unitary State
A governance system that concentrates political power in the central government, with subnational units holding very little power.
Advantages of a Unitary State
Efficiency in governance, but typically disconnected from local needs and lacks minority voices.
Examples of Unitary States
France, Japan, and Saudi Arabia are considered unitary states, with China as an exception.
Federal State
A governance system where political power is shared between a central government and regional governments.
Characteristics of a Federal State
Large territories with some cultural diversity, more responsive to local needs, and capable of accommodating different nations.
Challenges of a Federal State
Slower to enact policy changes, and state laws can challenge national laws.
