Cold War
A period of geopolitical tension between the U.S and Soviet Union and their allies, the Eastern and Western bloc, started after the end of WWII.
Superpower
A state that could not be ignored on the world stage and whose cooperation is essential to solve world problems; specifically refers to the U.S and Soviet Union during the Cold War.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
Created by the U.S, Canada, and several western European countries to provide security against the Soviet Union.
Warsaw Pact
A collective defense treaty signed in Warsaw, Poland by the Soviet Union and seven other Eastern Bloc republics.
Containment
A geopolitical strategy pursued by the US during the Cold War to prevent the spread of communism.
Potsdam Conference
A meeting of leaders from Britain, the U.S, and the Soviet Union to discuss the end of WWII and terms for free elections in Europe.
Truman Doctrine
An American foreign policy pledging support for democracies against authoritarian threats, aimed at stopping Soviet influence.
United Nations
An intergovernmental organization intending to maintain international peace and security, and promote friendly relations among countries.
Iron Curtain
A political metaphor used to describe the division of Europe into two separate areas during the Cold War.
Proxy War
A military conflict where third parties support combatants to influence outcomes and advance strategic interests.
Non-Aligned Countries
A forum of 120 countries that are not formally aligned with any major power.
Marshall Plan
An American initiative to provide foreign aid for economic recovery in Western Europe amounting to $13.3 billion post-WWII.
Domino Theory
The U.S foreign belief that the fall of a non-communist state to communism would lead to the fall of its neighboring states.
Berlin Wall
A guarded concrete barrier that separated West Berlin from East Berlin, symbolizing the division between the East and West during the Cold War.
Brinkmanship
The Cold War strategy of using fear and intimidation tactics to coerce opponents into submission or back down.
