Wave
a periodic disturbance . These are produced in all forms of matter even in empty space where ordinary matter does not exist
Wave motion
some sort of periodic displacement of an elastic medium from its normal position
Transverse Wave
is a wave in which the vibration direction is perpendicular to the direction of the wave propagation
Longitudinal or Compressional Wave
a wave in which vibration direction is parallel to the direction of propagation
Period of Vibration
is the time taken for a particle to move through in one complete cycle
Frequency of Vibration
the number of such vibrations executed by the particle each second
Crest
the top points on the wave
Trough
is the bottom points on the wave
Amplitude
the maximum displacement from their normal position of the particles that oscillate back and forth
Wavelength
is the distance between two successive points in a wave
Standing wave
a stationary wave pattern formed in a medium when two sets of identical wave pass through the medium in opposite directions
Reflection
the property of wave which occurs when a wave strike an object or carries to a boundary or another medium ad is at least diverted back into the original medium
Refraction
the wave property which occurs when a wave crrosses a boundary into another medium and its speed changes because new material has a different characteristics.
Diffraction
the property of wave to bend around the edge of an object but is unrelated tp refraction
Dispersion
the property of wave whereby waves of different frequency spread apart from one another
Interference
the wave phenomena that occur when two or more waves overlap in the sae region of space
