Texture

Motion

A musical texture consisting of a single independent layer of sound.
Homophonic
A texture with one prominent melody supported by chordal accompaniment.
Polyphonic
A texture featuring two or more independent layers of sound.
Heterophonic
A texture where variations of a single melody are played simultaneously.
Melody
The most important layer in music, often referred to as the tune.
Accompaniment
Harmonically supports the main melody in a piece of music.
Pulse Reinforcing
An instrumental line that highlights the pulse through rhythmic patterns.
Counter Melody
An independent melodic line performed simultaneously with the main melody.
Chordal Accompaniment
Accompaniment consisting of chords that may follow or have an independent rhythm.
Full Chords
Chords created by multiple instruments playing together to produce a rich sound.

Staggered Entries
A technique where musical layers enter one at a time, either closely or spread out.

A term meaning "all" or "everything," indicating all instruments or voices playing together.
