Self
An individual's awareness of who they are—their identity, thoughts, feelings, values, roles, and sense of agency; dynamic and multi-layered.
Identity
Qualities, beliefs, and characteristics that distinguish a person and are perceived by others; the outward sense of who someone is.
Society
The people and structures around us (family, schools, peers, media, government) that provide roles, rules, and expectations.
Culture
A set of shared values, traditions, customs, and beliefs passed from generation to generation; shapes behavior and worldview.
Nature
Biological development of characteristics from birth; innate, genetic factors.
Nurture
Development of characteristics through external factors like environment and social interaction.
Identity vs Self
Identity refers to qualities that distinguish a person as seen by others; Self is the internal, personal sense of who one is.
Social factors
The social environment components (family, relatives, friends, teachers, even strangers) that influence development.
Environmental factors
External environment and events that affect growth and behavior.
Hereditary factors
Biological changes and genetic aspects (e.g., puberty) that influence physical traits.
Person-volition factors
The individual's own choices and will that shape behavior and social identity.
Kapwa
Shared identity and connectedness with others in Filipino culture.
Pakikisama
Harmony and avoidance of conflict to maintain group unity.
Hiya
Modesty or shame that guides respectful behavior.
Utang na Loob
Deep gratitude and loyalty to family or benefactors.
Identity triangle
A visualization of identity as the interaction of Self, Society, and Culture.
Roles
Social positions or duties (e.g., student, friend) assigned by society.
Rules and expectations
Norms established by society about acceptable behavior.
Reflection
The process of thinking about one's identity and growth over time (e.g., comparing past and present self).
Identity map
A diagram/activity mapping personality traits, social roles, cultural values, and influences around the self.
