Key Definitions

  • Self: personal awareness of identity, thoughts, feelings, values, roles, agency; dynamic & multilayered
  • Society: people/structures around us (family, school, media, government) providing roles, rules, expectations
  • Culture: shared values, traditions, customs, beliefs transmitted across generations

Nature vs. Nurture

  • Nature: biological inheritance; traits present from birth
  • Nurture: external forces (environment, society) molding characteristics

Identity vs. Self

  • Identity: outwardly distinguishable qualities, beliefs, opinions perceived by others
  • Self: inner, personal character not fully visible to others

Dimensions of Self/Identity

  • Social factors: influence of family, peers, teachers, strangers on actions & thoughts
  • Environmental factors: physical surroundings & events affecting growth
  • Hereditary factors: biological changes (e.g., puberty) shaping physical traits
  • Person-volition factors: individual choices/ inclinations creating unique social constructs

How Society Shapes the Self

  • Assigns roles (e.g., student, friend) & behavioral rules
  • Sets expectations (parents, teachers, peers, media)

How Culture Shapes the Self

  • Dictates norms for speech, behavior, emotions, morality
  • Provides value framework (right vs. wrong)

Filipino Cultural Values

  • Kapwa: shared identity/connectedness
  • Pakikisama: harmony & conflict avoidance
  • Hiya: modesty/shame guiding respectful conduct
  • Utang na Loob: deep gratitude & loyalty

Interaction: Self – Society – Culture

  • Identity emerges from the triangle of internal self-view, societal perception, and cultural norms
