pGLO Plasmid
Small circular DNA that carries new genes into bacteria.
Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)
A protein that glows under UV light, produced by the pGLO plasmid.
Beta-lactamase
An enzyme produced by the pGLO plasmid that breaks down ampicillin.
Arabinose Operon
A regulatory switch that controls when the GFP gene is turned on in the presence of arabinose.
Transformation
The process of getting bacteria to take in the plasmid.
Survivability of Bacteria
Regular E. coli are killed by ampicillin unless they contain the bla gene from pGLO.
LB Medium
Nutrient-rich medium used to grow bacteria.
Ampicillin (Amp)
An antibiotic that kills bacteria by blocking cell wall formation.
Arabinose
A sugar that activates the arabinose operon to allow GFP expression.
Growth Conditions for Bacteria
Conditions under which bacteria can grow and express the GFP gene.
