Acculturation

The process of adopting a different culture than the one in which you were enculturated.

Anti-Racism

The policy or practice of opposing racism and promoting racial tolerance and equality across all institutions and society.

Classism

Rank ordering of individuals due to their economic, social, or educational status.

Cross-Cultural

Interactions between or among individuals who are culturally different, implying shared responsibility for quality, effectiveness, and outcomes.

Culture

The art, beliefs, values, customs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought created by a people or group.

Cultural Humility

A lifelong process of self-reflection and self-critique regarding one's own beliefs and cultural identities while learning about another’s culture.

Cultural Sensitivity

Basic and obvious respect and appreciation for cultures that may differ from one's own.

Discrimination

Unequal or preferential treatment; injustice toward particular individuals, groups, or peoples.

Ethnic Group

A group of individuals distinguished by customs, language, common culture, and geographic space.

Ethnicity

A shared socio-cultural history that includes similarities of religion, history, and common ancestry.

Gender Identity

How someone understands their gender, which may differ from their biological sex and can include identities like male, female, or transgender.

Homophobia

Prejudice against homosexual behavior and relationships.

Inclusive Language

Language that avoids expressions or words that might exclude particular groups of people, especially in terms of gender.

Language

A tool used by people to communicate, reflecting culture and enabling collaboration.

Linguistic Diversity

Varied types of traits including language family, grammar, and vocabulary; requires awareness and understanding.

Minority Status

The position of a group within another group, often numerically smaller and carrying potential prejudice.

Prejudice

A preconceived idea or negative attitude formed before the facts are known; a bias without reason.

Race

A pseudo-biological system of classifying persons based on shared genetic history or physical traits.

Racism

The belief that physical characteristics determine traits and capabilities, with the notion that some races are superior.

Sexism

Stereotyping behavior based on gender.

Sexual Orientation

The gender(s) of the people to whom one is attracted physically and romantically.

Socialization

The process of learning and internalizing cultural rules and patterns of behavior.

Stereotyping

An exaggerated belief or fixed idea about a person or group, often sustained by selective perspectives.

Transcultural

Interactions that transcend shared responsibility, with some individuals assuming greater responsibility for outcomes.

Transgender

People whose inner sense of gender does not match their physical body or sex assigned at birth.

Unconscious Bias

Implicit bias occurring unnoticed, leading to discrimination or incorrect judgments based on stereotypes.

World View

The unique perspective or way of interpreting life’s experiences by individuals and groups.
