Cultural Diversity flashcards

Acculturation - the process of adopting a different culture than the one in which you were enculturated.  

Anti-Racism - the policy or practice of opposing racism and promoting racial tolerance & equality across all institutions and society. 

Classism - Rank ordering of individuals due to their economic, social or educational status. 

Cross-Cultural - Interactions between or among individuals who are culturally different.  Cross cultural implies shared responsibility for quality, effectiveness, and outcomes of the interactions.  

Culture - The art, beliefs, values, customs, institutions (family, religious, etc.), and all other products of human work and thought created by a people or group.  The unique world views, customs, norms, patterns of behavior and traditions considered to be acceptable or desirable by a group of people.  Shared beliefs, norms, values and patterns of behavior that are learned through socialization.  

Cultural Humility – A lifelong process of self-reflection and self-critique whereby the individual not only learns about another’s culture, but one starts with an examination of their own beliefs and cultural identities. 

Cultural Sensitivity - Basic and obvious respect and appreciation for cultures that may differ from one’s own.  

Discrimination - Unequal or preferential treatment; injustice toward particular individuals, groups or peoples. Discrimination may be personal (expressed by individuals); group (expressed by a group of individuals) or institutional (expressed in policies and laws). 

Ethnic Group - A group of individuals distinguished by customs, language, common culture, and geographic space.  

Ethnicity - A shared socio-cultural history that includes similarities of religion, history, and common ancestry.  Important to individual and family identity. 

Gender Identity - How someone understands their gender (being female, male, or transgender).  A person’s inner understanding of what gender they identify with.   

  • It may be male, female, something in between or something that does not fit these labels.   

  • It may be the same as or different from one’s biological sex (sex they were assigned at birth).    

  • It is unique for each person.  

 

Homophobia - Prejudice against homosexual behavior and relationships. 

Inclusive Language - language that avoids the use of certain expressions or words that might be considered to exclude particular groups of people, esp. gender-specific words, such as “he” and “she,” the use of such pronouns might be considered to exclude one.  The best practice is to use “they” pronouns when referring to them.   

Language - is a tool used by people to communicate with one another. As a part of culture, language helps people to stick together and do things that they could not have done as individuals.  

Linguistic diversity - is a way to talk about varied types of traits including language family, grammar, and vocabulary.  The language of diversity is an evolving one that requires awareness, understanding and skill much in the same way as other areas of diversity competencies.  

Minority Status - The position of a group set apart within another group, usually numerically smaller but not always (as with women).  Minority status often carries with it prejudice by members of the large and/or somewhat more powerful group.  

Prejudice - A preconceived idea or negative attitude formed before the facts are known; a bias without reason that resists all evidence.  Prejudices are sustained over generations and imply inferiority, lead to suspicion and are detrimental to communication and interpersonal relationships. 

Race - A pseudo biological system of classifying persons of shared genetic history or physical characteristics such as skin color.  

Racism - The belief that different and obvious physical characteristics (primarily color of the skin) determine human traits, characteristics, and capabilities and that some races are superior to others.  (Racism= (Prejudice + Power).  

Sexism - Stereotyping one’s behavior based on gender.  

Sexual Orientation - The gender(s) of the people to whom we are attracted physically and romantically. 

Socialization - The process that occurs during development by which we learn and internalize rules and patterns of behavior that are affected by culture.  This process occurs over a long period of time and involves learning and mastering societal and cultural norms, attitudes, values and belief systems.  

Stereotyping - An exaggerated belief or fixed idea about a person or group which is held by people and sustained by selective perspective and selective forgetting.   

Stereotypes come from:  

  • Incomplete and distorted information 

  • Limited personal experience 

  • Outside source such as others’ interpretations of cultural behavior 

  • Stereotypes are natural but often destructive because they are: 

  • Unfair 

  • Do not allow for individuality 

  • Interfere with communication 

Transcultural - Interaction between or among individuals who are culturally different, which transcends the expectation of shared responsibility for quality, effectiveness, and outcome of the interaction.  Transcultural implies that one or a few individuals are willing to assume a greater degree of responsibility for quality, effectiveness, and outcomes of the interactions. 

Transgender - People whose inner sense of their gender does not match their physical body or sex assigned at birth.  

Unconscious bias – An unconscious bias (implicit bias) is when discrimination and incorrect judgements occur due to stereotyping or past experiences. This can occur automatically and without the person being aware of it. These types of biases are often in favor of or against one thing, person, or group as compared to another, in a way that is usually considered unfair. An example of this could be in relation to a person’s gender, age, or race.  

World View-The unique perspective or way of interpreting life’s experience by individuals and groups.
