Purpose of FFA
Analyse forces for (driving) and against change (restraining) in an organisation.
Change occurs if driving forces are greater than restraining forces.
Steps of FFA
Identify change
List driving and restraining forces
Score forces 1-5 to show strength and construct a diagram to visualise the results
Analyse the results in order to decide where it not to proceed with proposed change
Advantages and Disadvantages of FFA
Advantages:
Simple and visual - easy to understand.
Helps identify barriers and plan how to overcome them.
Disadvantages:
Subjective - force scoring can biased
Static - doesn’t show how forces change over time
Focuses on current situation, not long term impact.
Evaluation of FFA
The effectiveness depends on quality of data in terms of suitability, breadth and depth and how well or accurate the data is interpreted in order to select the right choice.
The role of Intuitive thinking and management can skew the results of the FFA
Hence, the outcomes of FFA have a direct impact on whether implementation of an organisation strategic plan is effective in influencing change.
