What’s the function of an erythrocyte?
Transports oxygen nn blood to tissues
Name the types of leukocytes
Neutrophil, Basophil, Eosinophil, Monocytes, Lymphoytes
What’s the function of each type of leukocytes?
Neutrophils are phagocytes
Eosinophil combat viral and parasitic infections
Basophil synthesises and stores histamine and heparin
Monocytes are phagocytotic cells
Lymphocytes provide immune defence against targets for which they are specifically programmed
Outline the steps of Haemostats
Constriction (or spasm) of the blood vessel [vasoconstriction]
– When a blood vessel is torn or cut it immediately constricts
– This reduces blood flow through the damaged vessel (until the hole is sealed)
2. Formation of a platelet plug
– Vessel injury means endothelial lining is disrupted, and collagen is exposed
– Circulating platelets attach to collagen using cell-surface receptors
• Layer of platelets forms foundation for platelet plug
– Collagen activates bound platelets
– Activated platelets release factors that activate and recruit other platelets to expand plug
– Platelet plug physically blocks small holes in blood vessels
3. Blood coagulation/clotting (clotting cascade)
What’s the principal plasma proteins?
Albumin- transport substances that are poorly soluble in plasma
Globulin- antibodies
Fibrinogen- involved in clotting proteins
