Composition

Is there compositional symmetry?

All the horse are caught in one static movement which is repeated across the frieze. They are all moving in the same direction.

Detail

How does the detail reinforce the narrative?

There is a tripod beneath the horses next to the figure of Diomedes this is significant as in Ancient Greece this was usually given to the winner. We know the figure is Diomedes as Dipinti is used to label him such. However his figure is difficult to see as his lower body is hidden by the horses and he is tiny in proportion to them which is very unrealistic

Detail

How is incision used to create detail in the horses?

The anatomy and musculature of the horses in their ribs and neck are incised. The horses manes are intricately incised. The legs of the horses are elongated to emphasise movement and the speed at which they are running
