What is the calculation for rate?
Rate = change/time
What do rate calculations work out?
How fast an enzyme is working (what its rate is)
What is the change in this equation?
The change in the substance being measured
What is the time in this equation?
The time taken for the change to occur
If you are only told the time taken for the reaction instead of the change, you can use what other equation?
Rate = 1/time
If a reaction takes 50 seconds for amylase break down starch at pH 6, calculate the rate at pH 6
1/50=0.02 s^-1
It is given in s^-1 as rate is given per unit time
If an enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen with the rate of 45cm³ of oxygen released every 5 minutes, what is the rate of reaction?
45/5=9cm³ or 9cm³ min^-1
What is the rate of reaction for an enzyme which breaks 15g starch in two hours?
15/2=7.5g/hr or 7.5g hr^-1
