Partial Fraction
The inverse operation of the addition and subtraction of fractions.
LCD
Lowest Common Denominator; the smallest multiple of the denominators in a set of fractions.
Algebraic Fraction
A fraction where the numerator and/or denominator are polynomials.
Factorise
To express a polynomial as the product of its factors.
Coefficients
The numerical factors in a term of a polynomial.
Identity
An equation that holds true for all values within a certain range.
Degree of a Polynomial
The highest power of the variable in a polynomial.
Long Division
A method used to divide polynomials when the degree of the numerator is equal to or greater than the degree of the denominator.
Equate
To set two mathematical expressions equal to each other.
Constants
The fixed values in an equation, not involving variables.
Equations
Mathematical statements that assert the equality of two expressions.
Numerator
The top part of a fraction representing the number being divided.
Denominator
The bottom part of a fraction indicating the number by which the numerator is divided.
Unknowns
Variables whose values are not known and need to be determined.
Prime Factors
The basic building blocks of a number, expressed as a product of prime numbers.
Repeated Linear Factor
A factor that appears more than once in the denominator of a fraction.
Irreducible Quadratic
A quadratic expression that cannot be factored into real linear factors.
Solve for A and B
The process of determining the values of the unknown constants in a fraction representation.
RHS and LHS
Right-Hand Side and Left-Hand Side; used to refer to expressions on either side of an equation.
Expand
To express a mathematical expression in a more detailed form.
Simplest Form
A fraction where the numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1.
