What are extrinsic eye muscles?
also called extraocular muscles
Attach to outer surface of eye; muscles that move the eyeball.
Six muscles: four rectus and two oblique
Where do the rectus eye muscles arise from?
The common tendinous ring (annulus of Zinn)
What does the medial rectus do?
pulls eye medially
Innervated by CN III (oculomotor)
What does the lateral rectus do?
pulls eye laterally
Innervated by CN VI (abducens)
what does the superior rectus do?
pulls eye superiorly and medially
Innervated by CN III (oculomotor)
What does the inferior rectus do?
pulls eye inferiorly and medially
Innervated by CN III (oculomotor
Oblique eye muscles
Inferior oblique
Superior oblique
Inferior oblique
elevates and turns eye laterally
Innervated by CN III (oculomotor)
Superior oblique
depresses and turns the eye laterally
Passes through pulleylike loop, the trochlea
Innervated by CN IV (trochlear)
muscle compartment
A group of muscles surrounded by fascia that perform similar functions.
Occur in the limbs
Muscles surrounded by deep fascia and subdivided by intermuscular septa
Each compartment composed of functionally related muscles
groin strain
(groin pull, pulled groin)
Injury to inner thigh muscles from sudden movement.
Tearing, stretching, straining proximal attachments of medial muscles of thigh
Typically occurs if muscles contract too suddenly, forcefully
Jumping, kicking, change direction while running
Strained or pulled hamstring
Hamstring tendons avulsed (torn away) during quick starts/stops, fast running, sudden lateral/medial stress to knee joint
Tearing of muscles in the back of the thigh.
What is compartment syndrome?
Dangerous pressure buildup in muscles → cuts off blood flow.
Causes of compartment syndrome
trauma (fractures, crush injurires, burns),
prolonged exertion or intense exercise,
casts and bandages that are too tight,
surgery
Symptoms of compartment syndrome?
SEVERE pain
numbness, tingling
weakness, swelling
pale or shiny skin,
inability to move the affected limb
Treatment for compartment syndrome
fasciotomy
Untreated, may result is severe damage to blood vessels/nerves and tissue death.
Amputation may be required.
