Ecology
The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment.
Environment
The place where all living and non-living things exist on Earth.
Biotic
All living organisms in an ecosystem.
Abiotic
All non-living things in an ecosystem.
Ecosystem
A complex self-regulating system where biotic and abiotic factors interact.
Sustainability of the environment
The ability of the population of living organisms to interact and reproduce indefinitely to preserve biodiversity.
Biodiversity
The number of different types of organisms in an area, indicating a healthy and suitable environment.
Habitat
The specific place where organisms live.
Niche
The role or job an organism plays in its ecosystem.
Open Ecosystem
An ecosystem where organisms can freely enter and leave.
Closed Ecosystem
An ecosystem where organisms cannot freely enter or leave.
Biosphere
The region of the Earth where all life exists.
Atmosphere
The layer of gases that surround the Earth.
Lithosphere
The Earth's soil and outer layer.
Hydrosphere
All water on Earth.
Biome
A large geographical area that contains similar ecosystems.
Producers
Organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis.
Consumers
Organisms that do not produce their own food but eat plants and animals to survive.
Decomposers
Organisms that chemically break down organic matter into nutrients.
Ecological Pyramid
A representation of the relationship between trophic levels in an ecosystem.
Pyramid of Numbers
Shows the number of organisms at each trophic level in a food chain.
Pyramid of Biomass
Takes into account the mass of each organism in a food chain.
Pyramid of Energy
Takes into account the energy transferred in a food chain, the most accurate type of ecological pyramid.
