Tracheostomy
An artificial opening in the neck into the trachea.
Tracheotomy
Surgical procedure to create a tracheostomy.
Inflatable cuff
The balloon on the end of a tracheostomy tube that forms a seal against the wall of the trachea when inflated.
Passy-Muir valve
A speaking valve that allows air to pass through the vocal cords for speech when attached to a trach tube.
Ventilator
A machine that provides mechanical ventilation to patients who are unable to breathe on their own.
Cuff pressure
The pressure exerted by the cuff against the tracheal wall to maintain a seal.
Fenestrated trach tube
A trach tube with holes that allow air to flow through for speaking and weaning.
Complications of tracheostomy
Include immediate risks like bleeding and pneumothorax; late risks like infection and obstruction.
Bivona foam cuff
A cuff filled with foam instead of air that self-fills by leaving the inflation line open.
Cuff inflation techniques
Methods used to maintain appropriate cuff pressure to prevent aspiration and ensure ventilation.
