ADHESIVES AND MOUNTING MEDIA
essential for methods that require exposure of sections to acids and alkali (ammoniacal silver solutions)
MAYER’S EGG ALBUMIN
Egg whites and Glycerin, Add Thymol crystals for antifungal effect. Convenient, relatively inexpensive
DRIED ALBUMIN
Dried albumin, Sodium Chloride, Dissolve in 100 cc of Distilled water. Add thymol crystals
GELATIN 1%
Gelatin, Distilled Water, Glycerol, Phenol Crystals
GELATIN FORMALDEHYDE
1% Gelatin and 2% Formaldehyde
STARCH PASTE
Powdered Starch, Distilled Water, Hydrochloric Acid, Thymol Crystals
PLASMA
Human plasma from expired blood bag units. Dispensed into sterile tubes of 0.5 ml each.
POLY-L-LYSINE
Aqueous detergent (0.1% solution) diluted in 1:10 ratio with distilled water. For immunohistochemistry
APES
Or 3-Aminopropylthriethoxysilane, useful in cytology, cytospin of proteinaceous or bloody
fluids
MOUNTING MEDIA
prevents the movement of coverslip, protects the stained section from scratches, bleaching or deterioration.
Prevents distortion of microscopic images.
MOUNTING MEDIA
The refractive index of the mountant should be as near as possible to that of the glass which is 1.518
MOUNTING MEDIA
Freely miscible with xylene and toluene
Aqueous and Resin type media
MOUNTING MEDIA- Two types are used:
WATER
Low refractive index, temporary mounting
GLYCERIN
High refractive index (1.46)
GLYCERIN
Consisted of Gelatin, Glycerol, Distilled Water and Phenol Crystals (preservative)
Glycerin Jelly
Standard Mounting Media (used when dehydration and clearing with Xylene cannot be made)
FARRANT’S MEDIUM
Refractive Index of 1.43
FARRANT’S MEDIUM
Consisted of Gum Arabic, Distilled Water, Glycerol and Sodium Merthiolate (Arsenic Trioxide can be used as a substitute)
APATHY’S MEDIUM
Refractive Index of 1.52
APATHY’S MEDIUM
For methylene-blue stained nerve preparations
APATHY’S MEDIUM
Add 50 grams of Potassium Acetate or 10 grams Sodium Chloride to prevent
APATHY’S MEDIUM
Bleeding of metachromatic stains for Amyloid
BRUN’S FLUID
Mounting frozen sections from water
CANADA BALSAM
Refractive Index of 1.524
CANADA BALSAM
Came from Abus balsamea (Canadian Tree)
CANADA BALSAM
For whole mounts and thick sections
DPX
Refractive Index of 1.532
DPX
For small tissues
XAM
Refractive Index of 1.52
XAM
Synthetic mixture in xylene
CLARITE
Refractive Index of 1.544
CLARITE
Preferred over DPX
