Bag Mask Ventilation (BMV)
A method of providing positive pressure ventilation to patients using a self-expanding bag and a mask.
Failed Oxygenation
Defined as the inability to tracheally intubate and maintain oxygen saturation above 90% with BMV.
Extraglottic Device (EGD)
A device placed above the vocal cords to enable ventilation, providing an alternative to bag mask ventilation.
Cricothyrotomy
An emergency procedure to secure an airway below the vocal cords when intubation is unsuccessful and ventilation is not possible.
Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA)
An extraglottic device that provides a hands-free airway by forming a seal around the laryngeal inlet.
Needle Cricothyrotomy
A technique using a large-bore catheter for emergency airway access through the cricothyroid membrane.
Open Surgical Cricothyrotomy
A surgical procedure to obtain airway access through an incision in the cricothyroid membrane.
Combitube (ETC)
An extraglottic device that can provide ventilation regardless of its position (oesophagus or trachea).
LMA ProSeal
A version of the LMA that includes a drain tube for suctioning esophageal contents.
C-spine Precautions
Considerations in airway management to avoid movement of the cervical spine in unstable patients.
