Famous actor from Marion, Indiana. Became a breakout star and Hollywood heartthrob after 3 major movies. Did his own racing on set. Died in a tragic car crash at age 24
Who was Phyllis Schlafly?
Leader of ERA Stop Campaign who was a female lawyer who glorified traditional women roles
What did Phyllis Schlafly believe would happen in ERA’s passage?
Loss of protective laws of sexual assault, inability to gain child custody in divorce case, and women being drafted in war
Who was Robert Orr?
He was an Indiana governor who increased the school year from 175 to 180 days, created ISTEP, and decreased the gap between rich and poor schools. This was in the 1980s education
Who was Robert F. Kennedy?
Brother of JFK, he managed to earn respect of Black and White Hoosiers. Made Indiana feel important when no other politician seemed to care. He won the 1968 Indiana Primary after touring state for 4 weeks
What was some of Robert Kennedy’s bad and good characteristics?
Bad- Liberal Catholic, rich, and worldly. He supported Civil Rights Movements. Good- He was down-to-earth, humble, and approachable
What did Robert Kennedy do the night MLK died and when did he die?
Gave an impromptu speech alerting the crowd of the murder of MLK. He was assassinated 2 months after leaving Indiana

Leading advocate for free public education in the 1800s. He passed laws that require all children to have 3 month of schooling free per year
What was the 1950s education like?
City schools had better teachers, classes, and resources than rural schools
What was the Reorganization Act of 1959?
It was a law that consolidated small township schools into larger schools (Shut down small school and move kids to big school).
What were the pros and cons of the Reorganization Act of 1959?
Pros is that it did give better organization. Cons is loss of identity
What was the 1981 Indianapolis Bus Experiment and why was it bad?
A program to bus minority students from inner city struggling schools to better ones in Marion County. (Put smart kids from bad schools to better ones). Bad because racial violence, Experiment was biased, and only minorities had to move schools
What was the Voucher System?
Allows families to use public school money to pay for private school tuition
Why do public schools claim to not like the Voucher System?
They need extra money because they teach neediest students, Private schools use vouchers to recruit athletes, and Private schools families are upper class and don’t need tuition assistance
What was the Equal Rights Aendment (ERA) and was it passed?
A constitutional amendment first proposed in 1923 that was meant to ban discrimination, especially gender. It was never passed

A state law that passed in Indiana that focused on opening opportunities to women in sports and education
What is redistricting? How often does this happen?
When boundaries of a legislative district are changed to balance out growing population. Happens every 10 years.
What things can change with redistricting?
Party stances, political affiliations, and values
What is Gerrymandering and is illegal?
When districts are drawn at odd shapes to increase one party’s chances of winning. Is not illegal.
Why is gerrymandering bad?
It skews political elections, weakens minority votes, and destroys trust in government
What is the Indiana Voting Law?
A law that states residents must present a valid ID on Election Day
What do critics say about the ID Law?
That it is unconstitutional because it deprives certain people of their right to vote. They believe that minorities, immigrants, and homeless are less likely to have an ID
