4 Basic Types of Tissue
epithelial, nervous, muscular, connective
Epithelial Tissue
simple, compound, and basement membrane
SIMPLE (Single) epithelial tissue
some fat, linings of blood vessels, heart, alveoli, lymphatic vessels, lining of stomach, intestines, nasal cavity, larynx, trachea, and bronchi
COMPOUND (multiple) epithelial tissue
epidermis of skin, lining of mouth, pharynx, esophagus
BASEMENT membrane (Baseplate) epithelial tissue
collagen, joins epithelial and connective tissues
Nervous tissue
Transfer of information, communicating tissue; includes brain, spinal cord, and nerves
Muscular tissue
specialized contractile tissue; includes striated (skeletal), smooth (internal organs), and cardiac
Connective Tissue
Connect or bind structures together, support body, and aid in body maintenance
Areolar
elastic, between muscles and organs
Adipose
fat globules, between muscles and organs
White fibrous
strong, closely packed; ligaments binding bones; periosteum covering bone; covering of organs; fascia over muscle
Yellow elastic
elastic; areas requiring recoil, such as trachea, cartilage, bronchi, lungs
Lymphoid
tonsils, adenoids, lymphatic nodes
Blood
red and white cells
Bone
hardest connective tissue, rigid; types compact/dense or spongy
Articulation (Joints)
Joining between bones
Cartilage
firm and flexible
Types of Cartilage
Hyaline, Fibrocartilage, Yellow
Hyaline
smooth, articulating surfaces of bones (larynx, trachea, bronchial passageway)
Fibrocartilage
dense, white, flexible, shock absorber; smooth surface for gliding; between disks, surfaces of knee joints
Yellow (elastic)
pinna, epiglottis
Tissue aggregates (Fibrous)
tendons, ligaments, fasciae
Tendons
non-elastic, always associated with muscle, attach muscle to bone, muscle to cartilage, or muscle to muscle
Aponeurosis
when tendons are sheet-like
Ligaments
little stretchy, great for tension; joins bone to bone, bone to cartilage, and cartilage to cartilage
Fasciae
A sheet like membrane; surrounds organs
