Adjective
A word that modifies (gives more information about/describes) nouns or pronouns. Can come before nouns or after linking verbs.
Examples of adjectives before nouns
The colorful tree is in the corner (colorful tells which tree).
Grandma knit a beautiful hat (beautiful tells what kind).
Five candles were lit (five tells how many candles).

Predicate Adjectives
Adjectives that come after linking verbs and describe the subject.
Adverb
A word that modifies (gives more information about/describes) verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Preposition
A word or group of words that shows a relationship between a noun(s) or pronoun(s) and another word in the sentence.
Commonly used prepositions
about, among, beneath, for, over, until, above, around, beside, from, to, upon, across, at, between, in, toward, with, after, before, beyond, inside, through, within, against, behind, by, into, throughout, without, along, below, during, of, under.
Prepositional phrase
A group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with one or more nouns or pronouns.
Complement
Complements that come after ACTION VERBS are called DIRECT OBJECTS (DO) and INDIRECT OBJECTS (IO). DO tells what receives the action, and IO tells to whom/for whom the action is committed.
Predicate Nominative
A noun that renames or identifies the subject after a linking verb.
Predicate Adjective
An adjective that describes the subject after a linking verb.
Clause
A group of words that work together, includes a subject and a verb, can be a complete sentence (independent) or not (dependent).
Conjunction
A word that joins words, phrases, or clauses; includes coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
