ὥς ποτέ τις ἐρέει·

Thus perhaps someone will speak;

σοὶ δ᾽ αὖ νέον ἔσσεται ἄλγος

and again there will be new pain for you

χήτεϊ τοιοῦδ᾽ ἀνδρὸς

in want of such a man

ἀμύνειν δούλιον ἦμαρ.

to ward off the day of your slavery.

ἀλλά με τεθνηῶτα χυτὴ κατὰ γαῖα καλύπτοι

but let heaped earth cover me

πρίν γέ τι σῆς τε βοῆς

before I learn anything of your shouting

σοῦ θ᾽ ἑλκηθμοῖο πυθέσθαι."

and your being carried off"

ὣς εἰπὼν οὗ

having spoken thus

παιδὸς ὀρέξατο φαίδιμος Ἕκτωρ·

glorious Hector reached out for his son,

ἂψ δ᾽ ο πάϊς πρὸς

But the child turned back

κόλπον ἐϋζώνοιο τιθήνης

into the bosom of the well-girdled nurse

ἐκλίνθη ἰάχων,

shrieking

πατρὸς φίλου ὄψιν ἀτυχθεὶς,

frightened by the appearance of his dear father,

ταρβήσας χαλκόν τε

Terrified by both the bronze helmet

ἰδὲ λόφον ἱππιοχαίτην,

and horsehair crest

δεινὸν ἀπ᾽ ἀκροτάτης

thinking it strange

κόρυθος νεύοντα νοήσας.

thinking it (strange) as it nodded from the top of his helmet

ἐκ δ᾽ ἐγέλασσε πατήρ τε φίλος καὶ πότνια μήτηρ·

His dear father and lady mother laughed loudly.

αὐτίκ᾽ ἀπὸ κρατὸς κόρυθ᾽ εἵλετο φαίδιμος Ἕκτωρ,

Immediately, glorious Hector took the helmet from his head,

καὶ τὴν μὲν κατέθηκεν ἐπὶ χθονὶ παμφανόωσαν·

And placed it, bright-shining, on the ground.

αὐτὰρ ὅ γ᾽ ὃν φίλον υἱὸν ἐπεὶ κύσε

When he had kissed his dear son

πῆλέ τε χερσίν,

dangled him in his arms,

εἶπε δ᾽ ἐπευξάμενος Διί τ᾽ ἄλλοισίν

he said, praying to Zeus and the other gods

τε θεοῖσι·

and the other gods:

"Ζεῦ ἄλλοι τε θεοί,

"Zeus and the other gods,

δότε δὴ καὶ τόνδε γενέσθαι παῖδ᾽ ἐμόν,

grant that this my son will be,

ὡς καὶ ἐγώ περ,

as I am

ἀριπρεπέα Τρώεσσιν,

most distinguished among the Trojans,

ὧδε βίην τ᾽ ἀγαθόν,

and as good in strength

καὶ Ἰλίου ἶφι ἀνάσσειν·

and that he rules over Troy mightily

καί ποτέ τις εἴποι

and perhaps someone may say (??)

"πατρός γ᾽ ὅδε πολλὸν ἀμείνων'

"this is a man far better than his father,

ἐκ πολέμου ἀνιόντα·

As he returns from battle.

φέροι δ᾽ ἔναρα βροτόεντα

May he bear bloodstained spoils

κτείνας δήϊον ἄνδρα,

Having killed a hostile man

χαρείη δὲ φρένα μήτηρ."

and may his mother rejoice in her heart."

ὣς εἰπὼν

having spoken thus

ἀλόχοιο φίλης ἐν χερσὶν ἔθηκε

he placed his son in the arms of his dear wife

παῖδ᾽ ἑόν· ἣ δ᾽ ἄρα μιν κηώδεϊ δέξατο κόλπῳ

and she received him in her fragrant bosom

δακρυόεν γελάσασα·

smiling tearfully

πόσις δ᾽ ἐλέησε νοήσας,

her husband, perceiving this, took pity on her

χειρί τέ μιν κατέρεξεν,

And caressed her with his hand

ἔπος τ᾽ ἔφατ᾽ ἔκ τ᾽ ὀνόμαζε·

and called her by name

"δαιμονίη,

"Dearest one

μή μοί τι λίην ἀκαχίζεο θυμῷ·

do not be too grieved for me in your heart

οὐ γάρ τίς μ᾽ ὑπὲρ αἶσαν ἀνὴρ Ἄϊδι προϊάψει·

For no man will send me to Hades before my time

μοῖραν δ᾽ οὔ τινά φημι

I say that no one escapes their fate

πεφυγμένον ἔμμεναι ἀνδρῶν,

(I say) that no man has escaped

οὐ κακόν, οὐδὲ μὲν ἐσθλόν,

neither good nor bad

ἐπὴν τὰ πρῶτα γένηται.

from the moment they are first born.

ἀλλ᾽ εἰς οἶκον ἰοῦσα τὰ σ᾽ αὐτῆς ἔργα κόμιζε

but, going into the house, take care of your own tasks

ἱστόν τ᾽ ἠλακάτην τε,

The loom and the distaff

καὶ ἀμφιπόλοισι κέλευε

and order the servants

ἔργον ἐποίχεσθαι·

to go to their work

πόλεμος δ᾽ ἄνδρεσσι μελήσει

war will be the concern of all men,

πᾶσι, μάλιστα δ᾽ ἐμοί, τοὶ Ἰλίῳ ἐγγεγάασιν."

all men native to Troy, but especially to me.

ὣς ἄρα φωνήσας

Having spoken thus,

κόρυθ᾽ εἵλετο φαίδιμος Ἕκτωρ

at once glorious hector took the helmet from his head

ἵππουριν·

horse-hair crest

ἄλοχος δὲ φίλη οἶκον δὲ βεβήκει

his dear wife went home

ἐντροπαλιζομένη,

turning around repeatedly

θαλερὸν κατὰ δάκρυ χέουσα.

pouring down copious tears

αἶψα δ᾽ ἔπειθ᾽ ἵκανε δόμους εὖ ναιετάοντας

at once then, she reached the well built house of

Ἕκτορος ἀνδροφόνοιο,

of man-slaying Hector,

κιχήσατο δ᾽ ἔνδοθι πολλὰς ἀμφιπόλους,

and found many servants inside,

τῇσιν δὲ γόον πάσῃσιν ἐνῶρσεν.

and urged lamentation upon them all

αἳ μὲν ἔτι ζωὸν γόον Ἕκτορα

They lamented Hector, still living

ᾧ ἐνὶ οἴκῳ·

in his own home

οὐ γάρ μιν ἔτ᾽ ἔφαντο ὑπότροπον

For they said that he would not come back

ἐκ πολέμοιο

from the war,

ἵξεσθαι προφυγόντα μένος καὶ χεῖρας Ἀχαιῶν.

escaping the might and hands of the Achaeans.
