What is a vector quantity?
Has a magnitude (size) and a direction
Examples of vector quantities
Force, velocity, displacement, weight, acceleration, momentum
What is a scalar quantity?
Has ONLY magnitude (size) and no direction
Examples of scalar quantities
Speed, distance, mass, energy, temperature, time
What is the difference between velocity and speed?
Velocity is a vector, but speed is a scalar quantity (they both measure how fast you’re going); this means you can have objects travelling at a constant speed with a changing velocity (happens when the object is changing direction whilst staying at the same speed)
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is scalar (how far an object has moved), displacement is a vector (measures the distance and direction in a straight line from an object’s starting point to its finishing point)
What is speed?
How fast you’re going
What is velocity?
How fast you’re going in a given direction(e.g. 30mph north)
