used when investigating feelings or attitudes, needs to have an odd number of positive and negative options w/ a neutral one in the middle

matrix question

combine multiple types, bunch of questions about one overall question

multiple option

not limited to one answer

nominal questions

responses are assigned a number and the number does not carry meaning

ordinal questions

all possible answers are ranked in order
