Allegory

a story/poem/picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning

Allusion

A reference to another work/person/event

Deduction

the process of moving from a general rule to a specific example

Induction

process moving from a given series of specifics to a generalization to make a conclusion

Syllogism

Combining two statements/premises to make a conclusion.

• Ex: an apple is a fruit. + All fruit is good. = An apple is good.

Metonymy

something is referred to by another closely-related thing.

• Ex: “The White House issued a statement.”

  • The White House is likely referring to the President.

  • They are both closely related.

Juxtaposition

placing 2 non-similar things near each other to compare or contrast them & emphasize their differences

Paradox

a statement that seems false or self-contradicting but, when looked at, is shown to be true

Oxymoron

figure of speech that combines (puts right next to each other) seemingly opposite or contradicting things in a phrase
